Power of Attorney Attestation Process

Power of Attorney can come under both attestation processes – personal and commercial document attestation. If the POA is related to business, then there will be CoC verification, MEA verification and embassy attestation.

Step 1: Notarization

If your POA is personal in nature, notarization by a notary public is needed. A notary Public is a government official who is appointed to verify the originality of your POA and you. Once the POA is notarized you can move ahead with the next stage of verification.

Step 2: Chamber of Commerce (CoC)/ Home Department verification for Power of Attorney Certificate

If your POA is commercial, you have to directly take your documents to the Chamber of Commerce. This department verifies the authenticity and validity of your Power of Attorney certificate. Obtaining COC certification enhances your company’s reputation by demonstrating that it is reliable and compliant with the law. If the power of attorney comes under the personal document, then it must be verified by the home department of state or SDM.

Step 3: MEA Attestation of Power of Attorney

A government seal or stamp applied to a document by the Ministry of External Affairs to certify its originality is known as a MEA attestation. When used outside of India, this is a necessary requirement for many documents, including Power of Attorney. The highest authority in India for foreign affairs is MEA which can do the verification of your documents on a national level. MEA-stamped POA demonstrates to the consulate that the document is authentic and unaltered.

Step 4: Embassy Attestation for Power of Attorney

The procedure ends with this step. An embassy functions similarly to an official national office abroad. It promotes commercial and cultural exchange, supports its nationals overseas, and strengthens ties between the two nations. Embassy attestation is essential because it verifies the legitimacy of documents from one nation so they can be used in another.
