Export Invoice Attestation

How to Get Invoice Attestation in India

An export/commercial invoice is a document that is needed for international trade. It has all the details of the goods being exported, their value, and the parties involved in the export process. But this document cannot be used directly abroad. To ensure its legal validity in foreign countries, this document often requires attestation. Attestation is a verification process conducted by authorized government agencies who will check your documents and stamp them to prove that they’re real. For exporting your products or raw materials from India, the embassy and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) should do their attestation. By getting your export/commercial invoice attested, you’re showing foreign customs authorities that your invoice can be accepted and is real. Let’s explore the whole process.

Export Invoice/ Commercial Invoice Attestation Process

Since the Export Invoice is a commercial document, it will undergo the standard three-phase commercial document verification process.
Step 1: Chamber of Commerce (CoC) verification for Export Invoice Certificate
Usually, the attestation process for documents starts with notarization or directly state-level authority like the HRD or home department. But when it comes to commercial documents, the attestation process often begins with verification by a Chamber of Commerce (CoC). The Chamber of Commerce is an independent institution and not affiliated with the government, but have the power to verify your documents. They ensure the authenticity and validity of your documents, such as Export invoice Certificates. Their stamp acts like an approval and adds credibility to your business documents. Once you secure the CoC stamp, you can take your export invoice to the next round of verification.

The MEA attestation process typically involves submitting your verified original document to them. Many countries require foreign documents to be first attested by the MEA before moving ahead with the embassy attestation process. Once verification is done, your export invoice is stamped with the MEA seal, confirming its authenticity.

Note: You cannot directly take your export invoice to MEA without prior verification.

This is the final stop for attesting your export invoice. A foreign embassy is a building or office in another country where representatives from a different nation work. These representatives help with things like visas, and passports, taking care of citizens from their home country, and verification of documents. Once you submit your export invoice document to the embassy, they will do final verification and grant an attestation stamp. This lets you use your export invoice in their country.

Fees & Time for Export Invoice Attestation

Embassy attestation of the export invoice can take anywhere from 3 to 4 days, with some embassies requiring additional time for verification. The cost is generally INR 3000 + Embassy fees, but it can vary based on the embassy and invoice value.
