Clear Your Doubts

1. What is the purpose of the apostille?
An apostille is a stamp that verifies the authenticity of a public document, so it can be recognized in other countries that are part of the Hague Convention. In simple words, it is a process to verify the originality of your documents.
The Hague Convention, also known as the Apostille Convention of 1961, is an international agreement that makes the process of document legalization simple. Instead of a long traditional process, an apostille from one member country is accepted by all others, saving you time and effort.
Yes, India has been part of the Hague Convention treaty since 14 July 2005.

Your documents will go through 3 stages of verification to get an apostille stamp. Here is an overview:

  1. Notarization
  2. State-level verification:
  • Personal documents are verified by the state’s home department.
  • Commercial documents are verified by the Chamber of Commerce (CoC)
  • Educational documents are verified by the HRD or SDM
  1. Apostille by the Ministry of External Affairs

To get an apostille on your document, you need the following documents.

  • The original documents
  • Clear photocopies of the original documents
  • Proof of identity (Passport or Aadhaar card)
  • Notary stamp (optional)

An apostille is required for the countries that are part of the Hague Convention. As of June 2024, 126 countries are part of it including European countries, the USA, the UK, South Korea, and others.

An Attestation can be defined as a broader term that can involve verifying a document by various authorities including the embassy of your destination country. On the other hand, an apostille is a specific type of document legalization recognized by Hague Convention countries. For getting an apostille, an embassy attestation is not needed.
