Attestation is like a stamp of approval that proves your documents are genuine and not fake. If you’re planning to move to another country for work, school, personal reasons, or business, you’ll need this seal on your documents. It confirms that your papers are real and can be used overseas. Whether you’re going to Vietnam, China, UAE, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, or elsewhere, attestation is a must. It’s required for all kinds of certificates, like birth and marriage certificates, degree certificates, and even invoices. Any document from India that you want to use abroad needs attestation. If you’re in Pune, you can find all the details about attestation below.
There are 4 stages of verification to get an attestation stamp on your document.
Notary attestation is the first step in the authentication process. It involves getting a notary stamp from a Notary Public Office, making the document ready for further attestation and legalization procedures. The Notarization is needed for some documents like affidavits, personal declarations, and others.
Depending on your document type, you have to visit various offices within your state for document verification.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is India’s main government body overseeing foreign affairs. It’s also the authority that authenticates documents issued in India. Whether personal, educational, or commercial, all documents need a stamp from the MEA as part of the legalization process. Once your documents get verified by SDM/ Home department/ HRD/ Chamber of Commerce, you can submit your documents to MEA for verification. After validation, they put a unique stamp on your document, giving it final approval from India.
Embassies are like foreign offices in other countries. They check if your documents are real before you use them abroad. It’s called Embassy Attestation. This confirms that your papers, like your birth certificate or degree, are real. Before you go to work or study in another country, you need to get your documents attested by that country’s embassy. After the MEA stamps your papers, take them to the embassy of your destination country in India. They’ll give it a final check and stamp so you can use them in your destination country.
This process requires visiting various government offices independently. First, you need to get a notary stamp, then attest your documents at the Human Resource Department (HRD) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Finally, you present the verified documents to the foreign Embassy for the last attestation. While possible, it can be time-consuming and stressful. Any mistakes or missing details in your application will require redoing the process, prolonging the time to get embassy attestation.
